This unusual silver mounted ashtray is hallmarked Birmingham 1926. It has a matchbox holder in the centre and two silver holders for cigarettes are fixed to a silver ring around the top of the bowl. It stands on a small dished plinth.
Both the matchbox holder in the centre and the ring around the top of the bowl are hallmarked with identical hallmarks. The maker's initials hallmarks are HM which stands for Henry Matthews who was active in Birmingham around that time.
The body of the ashtray is a pale green urea formaldehyde resin, although many people would describe it (incorrectly) as Bakelite. It has faded as can be seen by looking at the underside which has been covered, but it is still a lovely soft green colour.
This is an unusual item and I have not seen an ashtray before in this particular combination of materials.
The ashtray is 120mm in diameter and 145mm overall of cigarette holders. It is 60mm overall height to top of matchbox holder.
Some wear to the hallmarks on the perimeter ring but otherwise good condition.
Please note. I do my best to accurately photograph and describe the condition of the items for sale, including any minor defects but all pieces are vintage and have had previous lives and so may have minor flaws.
