This unusual chicken shaped napkin ring is almost 3 times the thickness of the usual napkin rings and so I assume that it is a section that was left over during the manufacturing process.
It it a lovely strong green colour, although there is some discolouration with age. The cut faces have become more discoloured than the polished faces, presumably because the cut surfaces have left a larger and rougher surface area for oxidation to take effect.
The shape is the same as other chicken napkin rings and so must have come from the same extrusion die. They were originally made as a single long extruded bar (see the rabbit uncut bar on this site) and were then cut to form individual rings. In contrast to the usual smooth napkin rings the 2 large faces still have the marks from the bandsaw that was used to cut the long extrusion into individual rings.
Overall size is 75 x 65mm, the thickness varies from 24 to 26mm.
There is a small chip to the beak. Judging by the colour of the surface this must have happened around about the time of manufacture. Apart from this the napkin ring is in good condition.
Very unusual napkin ring that would stand out in a collection.
Of course if you have the right equipment (and confidence) it could be cut to make several thinner napkin rings.
Please note. I do my best to accurately photograph and describe the condition of the items for sale, including any minor defects but all pieces are vintage and have had previous lives and so may have minor flaws.
