This is a Spiro brand razor blade sharpener. Today a razor gets thrown away when the blade has become blunted, when this was made men would resharpen used blades, sometimes getting over 100 shaves from a blade.
Made by John Watts of Sheffield and London it says that it will sharpen "Gillette Type" blades. Interestingly it has Made in England written in French so they must have been aiming for the european market.
Very well made in chromed steel it is designed to sharpen both sides of the blade at the same time. There is nothing to indicate an age but it could be 1920's or 30's but possibly even older. Overall size is approx 60 x 60 x 60mm with the handle protruding beyond the main body of the sharpener.
Generally very good condition. I have left it virtually as found so that the buyer can get a feel for the age.
Please note. I do my best to accurately photograph and describe the condition of the items for sale, including any minor defects but all pieces are vintage and have had previous lives and so may have minor flaws.
