Leicestershire Vagrancy Committee mid-day meal tickets for females

Three original Mid-day meal tickets, for females, issued by the Leicestershire Vagrancy Committee. Dating from the 1920's they have the 3 digits 192 printed on the ticket with the 4th year digit to be added when issued.

These were issued by the Vagrancy Committee to people who were supported by the Poor Law Unions and were away from the Workhouse during the day so they could have food at lunchtime. The holder of the ticket would give it to the shopkeeper who in turn would send it to the Poor Law Union for payment.

A female was allowed 4 ounces of bread and 2 ounces of cheese, hardly a large lunch. Males, whose tickets were a different colour, were given a larger amount of food.

Size 13 x 10.5cm on fairly thin paper. Generally good condition although there is some fading, not surprising after nearly 100 years.

Very interesting item for collectors of social history ephemera and the workhouse and vagrancy systems.

Please note. I do my best to accurately photograph and describe the condition of the items for sale, including any minor defects, but all pieces are vintage and have had previous lives and so may have minor flaws.

Postage is for UK only, please enquire for overseas postage.
