This book was published in 1916 in connection with a fundraising event organised by the Mayor and Councillors in aid of the 'Mayor's £100,000 scheme for disabled Sailors and Soldiers of Leicester and County'.
The event was held in The Market Place and involved 350 stalls on 2 days together with a wide variety of entertainments by amateur and professional performers as well as pupils from local schools. It must have been a very large event as the list of organisers and helpers runs to 14 pages.
The book has 94 pages plus covers and gives details of the event and what would be taking place, there are also details of the history of Leicester and illustrations from its history. Also included are 2 poems by John Oxenham entitled "Our hearts for you" and "No peace but a right peace" with illustrations of the texts.
At the front and back of the book are many pages of adverts for local companies, quite a few are very well known but also quite a few that are now long gone.
The adverts are very well produced and illustrated, obviously the various companies were intending to impress the readers.
Size 250 x 185mm. The heavy paper covers are larger than the page sizes and so there is wear to the edges of the covers. Inside the book the pages vary in size and some pages have uncut edges, I don't know if this was intentional or was just a result of paper shortages at the time.
There is some foxing to the pages but overall it is still in pretty good condition.
This is a fascinating book and one that I have never seen before. It gives a good insight into Leicester during WW1.
